What the two numbers mean

Player 1’s equity is the average, over every pairing of a hand from range 1 with a hand from range 2 (skipping pairings that share a card), of how often the first beats the second. A tighter range usually has more equity — but the board can reverse that: a low, connected flop often favours the wider range.

Preflop the pairings run into the hundreds of thousands, so the headline is simulated with 200,000 random deals and the standard error is shown. On a flop, turn or river the calculator enumerates exactly whenever the work fits its budget, and says so.

Reading the coloured cells

Each cell in a range shows how that hand does against the whole opposing range: green above 50%, red below. This is where range analysis earns its keep — you can see that the bottom of a wide range is nearly hopeless against a tight one, and that a hand like a small pair can be a favourite against a range full of big cards.

Hands are ordered by equity against one random hand. This is an educational example of how ranges widen, not a recommendation of what to play.
